10 Things Christian Women Need To Know About Self-Care
Self-care is taking time out of the day to look after ourselves. It is about making time to do things that will make us feel better, and happy. The major components of self-care include: physical health, mental health and emotional health. In addition to this, there is our spiritual health as well. As long as the center-focus of all that we do, is based around our faith in God, then we will be able to replenish our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing.
Is This Really That Important For Christians Though?
Self-care is so important for everyone to do, especially Christians, because it allows us to rest, and feel rejuvenated, similar to that of practicing the Sabbath. Even though the Sabbath is an Old Testament Law, Jesus said in Mark 2:27-28 that He is Lord of the Sabbath. Everyday we rest in Jesus.
In a previous blogpost of mine, I answered the question, “is self-care biblical?” to help establish the argument I have FOR practicing self-care, as a Christian woman. God tells us that our body is a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells in (1 Corinthians 6:15-20). As such, we need to treat our bodies accordingly. From eating healthy, to exercising, to nourishing our soul with the word of God daily, all of this helps to look after ourselves, which is the very definition of self-care.
Here are some wonderful tips on how to practice self care,.
1. Yes, It’s Biblical!
As I have previously stated, self-care is biblical because God wants us to rest in Him. He does not want us to work until we burn out (hence why He created the Sabbath day – so that we can rest and focus on Him). As long as we do things that are for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31), and are not self-centered, then self-care can easily be practiced by Christians. Furthermore, Jesus took time alone to spend with God and to fast (Luke 5:16; Matthew 4:2).
2. All Of This Is Necessary
We all need a break, we all need time to ourselves (Matthew 11:28). It is so important and necessary for us to take time out of the day to unwind and look after and treat ourselves the same way that we do with others.
3. It Is Not Selfish
As a Christian women, practicing self-care is about seeing that our bodies are a temple of God and treating it accordingly (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). We are not doing this for ourselves, we are doing this because we respect our bodies and our faith and obedience to God, and all that He has done for us.
4. This Is Simple
Self-care can be as simple as eating healthy, exercising, reading the word of God, going to Church, listening to worship music and resting in Christ. It is also about not letting anything come out of your body that will defile you (Matthew 15:11). Keep walking on the straight and narrow, keeping your focus on Christ above and not allowing yourself to fall into the trap of sin or worldly desires.
5. It Doesn’t Have To Cost You A Dime
Through all of what I have just mentioned, self-care doesn’t have to cost you a thing. You don’t have to invest a lot or any money at all to practice self-care as a Christian.
6. There Is More Than Meets The Eye
A lot of people might think that self-care is new-agey, or that it’s about pouring a glass of wine and relaxing in a bubble bath at the end of the day. There is more to it than meets the eye. When we look at what the true definition of self-care is and how we, as Christians, can practice it with God as the center-focus, it isn’t about these mainstream ideas. it is about putting God first in all that you do, and taking time out of the day to completely rest your soul in Him.
7. You Can Strengthen Your Faith In God
It can allow you to become closer to God. As such, this can help you strengthen your faith and trust in God.
8. Our Spiritual Health Is Important
When we break down the major components that create self-care, we have to include our spiritual health and wellness too. It is so important to look after ourselves, especially our spiritual health and you can do this by reading the Bible, studying His Word, listening to worship songs/singing psalms, and putting God first in all things no matter what (Matthew 6:33).
9. This Helps Us To Serve Others
Not only is practicing self-care going to benefit us, but it is also going to help us to serve others (1 Peter 4:10). As Christians, we are called to serve others, and as long as we take time out of the day to look after our health and wellness, we will be able to have the energy and focus to help and serve others, too.
10. You Can Find Your Purpose & Worth
This might not be believable, but once we set aside time out of the day to practice self-care, we can start to understand who God created us to be, and what He wants us to do in our lives. Our purpose can be found by trusting God, obeying Him and following His Word (Romans 8:28). Our worth is found in Christ alone, who died for our sins on the cross (Galatians 2:20).
I encourage you all to read your Bible, let the Holy Spirit guide you to seeking the truth about self-care, and allow His Will to do be done in your life. I hope that these important points about self-care has helped you to understand about the topic a bit better and will help you to focus on your spiritual health, and your relationship with Jesus.
