20 Amazing Self-Care Tips For Christian Moms
Self-care is when a person participates in certain activities that helps them take care of their personal health and wellbeing. It is am important thing that everyone should be doing in their lives. We, as Christians, need to make sure that we understand what self-care is and how to practice self-care in order to take care of ourselves. In particular, Christian moms should learn all about what self-care is as a Christian and how to practice it daily.
Christian Moms Don’t Really Practice Self-Care
The problem about self-care in the Christian community is that, I believe it is not often spoken about or understood, and therefore isn’t important or necessary. However, I decided to answer the common question, “is self-care biblical?” by creating a foundation for my argument about practicing self-care for Christians and Christian moms too.
Why Is This The Case?
Christians can be put off by the concept of “self-care” because they might think that it is part of the new age moment, and/or is self-centered. Not everyone will agree that it is something that God wants us to do in our lives. Also, motherhood can be quite overwhelming and tiresome and we don’t always seem to have enough time out of the day to spend on ourselves.
Self-care is biblical for Christian moms.
God created the world in 6 days and on the 7th day He rested. Through this, He created the sabbath day for us to rest and to not work. That in itself is the perfect example of God allowing us to take time off work and other things, and to spend a day unwinding and relaxing. Self-care is exactly that; it is about taking time out of the day to relax and to let us recharge.
Best Tips For Encouraging Christian Moms
In my previous blog post, I have presented various different scriptures that highlight the importance of taking care of ourselves, and God giving us time to rest. When we do different things that help us rejuvenate replenish our mind, body, soul and spirit, we are going to feel much better. As long as God is the center-focus for all that we do, self-care is important and necessary for Christians. It is not selfish.
As a single Christian mom, I completely understand how difficult it can be to find time out of the day to spend on yourself. Trust me, I get it. But we need to understand that we cannot run on empty, we need to fill up our cups first, and learn to take care of ourselves, the same way that we take care of our family. Find out more about self-care tips and encouragement for moms here.
I want to share with you my best tips for encouraging Christian moms to practice self-care.
TIP 1: CHANGE YOUR MINDSET
Romans 12:2 – “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.
First and foremost, you need to be able to understand and believe that self-care is a biblical concept and it is important for us to practice each day. Self-care allows us to avoid burn out, and gives us opportunities to improve upon our health and wellness, as well as bettering ourselves for the glory of God.
Learn to change your mindset about what self-care is and whether or not it is biblical and important, and start to incorporate it into your daily lives/routines. Allow yourself to make time in the day to focus on yourself for a change.
TIP 2: PRAY
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 -“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”.
Philippians 4:6 – “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God”.
The Bible tells us to stay in prayer; to pray without ceasing. God wants us to talk to Him and allow Him to be part of our lives. Prayer is the direct communication between yourself and God, and as such, we need to give everything to God in prayer, no matter how big or small.
Whenever we have any kind of important decisions to make, or changes to occur in our lives, we need to talk to God first. Prayer is going to help you take care of your relationship with God. Just like any other relationship that you have, communication is key.
No matter what we are going through, always talk to God. A great example of this is the story of Daniel. He was very close to God and God loved Daniel very much. During this time, The advisers of King Darius despised Daniel and wanted to get rid of him. They went to the King and told him that he should make a rule that everyone should only worship you and no other gods. The King agreed to this. Then the advisors saw that Daniel was praying to God and they went and told the King in order to punish him.
Daniel would be praying and praying to God, asking for help and protection. He stayed in prayer and stayed faithful to God no matter what. When king Darius heard about Daniel, he threw him into the lion’s den. But remember what happened? God protected Daniel and made sure that he was not going to be harmed by those lions.
Stay in prayer and trust God. He will always be faithful and live up to His promises for us.
TIP 3: STUDY THE BIBLE
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “all scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works”.
Spend time each day studying the word of God. Allow His words to nourish and replenish you. Studying the Bible gives me so much joy knowing that this is another way that God is communicating with us. He tells us everything that we need to know and do in our lives, so it is going to reassure you and comfort you.
TIP 4: SPEND TIME ALONE WITH GOD
Luke 5:16 – “And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed”.
Spending time alone with God is going to make you feel so good. It is going to help your relationship with God tremendously also. Jesus Himself spent time alone with God, leaving his disciples while He went to pray. Make sure that you can take time out of the day to focus on spending time alone with God.
TIP 5: BE CONTENT
1 Timothy 6:6 – “But godliness with contentment is great gain”.
Learn to be content in all things. Don’t let your emotions get in the way of your peace, your happiness or your relationship with God. Nothing is more important than Jesus. Allow Him to be the center-focus in all that you do each day and be happy/content with everything that is happening in your life.
TIP 6: PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Psalm 118:24- “This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it”.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”.
Start practicing gratitude each day and be thankful for all that God has blessed you with. When we practice gratitude, we start to feel happier, and more positive about what is going on in our lives. It also gives us a more appreciative attitude towards what God has done for us and what He will continue to do for us.
TIP 7: SIT AT JESUS’ FEET
Luke 10:39 – “And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word”.
Remember the story when Jesus was welcomed into this woman’s house named Martha and her sister, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and hear what He had to share? When Martha sees what Mary was doing, she complained that Mary had left her to do all the work that had to be done in the kitchen. Jesus responded by saying why are you so worried and upset about this? Mary has chosen what is better/more important. This is an important lesson for us to learn. Even if we are bombarded by chores, or work, we still need to stop and take time to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear His words.
TIP 8: FIND YOUR COMMUNITY
John 15:13 – “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”.
Proverbs 27:17 – “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend”.
Dear All Christian Moms: Finding your tribe is important in the Christian community. Whether it is going to Church or bible study groups, create some new friendships with like-minded Christians who will support you on your journey in the faith.
TIP 9: FORGIVE
Colossians 3:13 – “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye”.
Ephesians 4:32 – “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”.
Forgiveness is a very important thing for Christians to practice, especially as Christian moms. We need to forgive ourselves, and we also need to forgive others too. God Himself has forgive us for our sins when we have repented and turned to Jesus, and so we should be able to do the same to others. Holding grudges is only going to bring such negativity into your lives.
TIP 10: STAY POSITIVE
Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”.
Choose joy. Stay positive and don’t let the negatives bring you down. You are a child of God! Also remember that God comes first in all things no matter what.
TIP 11: REST
Matthew 11:28 – “Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”.
Slow down, take it easy, and give yourself time to unwind and relax. God will give you the rest that you need. It is so important to rest; otherwise you will burn-out. This is all part of self-care. God Himself rested on the 7th day after creating the whole world. He even gave us the sabbath day to rest.
TIP 12: EXERCISE
1 Corinthians 6:19 – “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
Our body is a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells in. As such, we need to treat it accordingly. Start exercising and eating healthy. Look after your body and your health.
TIP 13: SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX
Take a step back from being on social media. Practice detoxing by taking breaks, even from other technology too. It is going to help you see what is more important in your life, rather than being glued to the online world.
TIP 14: SERVE OTHERS
1 Peter 4:10 – “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God”.
Jesus wants us to love and serve others. He sets the perfect example for this in Matthew 20:27-28. When we serve others, it is going to help show us the purpose and reason for why we were created. Our hearts will be fuller and we will feel so much better about ourselves too.
TIP 15: LISTEN TO WORSHIP MUSIC
Colossians 3:16 – “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord”.
Listening to worship music is going to help you relax, and unwind and fill your thoughts and emotions with people singing about praising God and sharing His word in song. Did you know that the entire book of Psalms were songs written by King David? Music can be used to worship God, as long as the songs reflect Him and His Word (and isn’t secular music). What is your favorite Christian song/artist?
TIP 16: FAILURE IS INEVITABLE
Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”.
In order to succeed at anything, failure is inevitable. I wanted to share that with you so that you know. There are no perfect Christian moms or children. No one is perfect, but Jesus. We can still strive towards following in the footsteps of Jesus though. Although we are saved, we are still living in the flesh and we will have our temptations, and fall into sin. That is why the grace of God is so good, so merciful and so powerful. His grace and love are greater.
TIP 17: LOVE YOURSELF
Matthew 22:39 (b) – “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself”.
Jesus wants us to love others the same way that we love ourselves. He wants us to love and accept ourselves for who we are, for how we have been created. Practicing self-love is important because it helps us learn who we are, and to see ourselves the same way that God does. He doesn’t make mistakes. He didn’t make any mistakes when making you, so don’t ever try to change yourself to be someone or something that you are not. If you want more help on knowing what self-love is and how to practice self-love, check out these amazing tips here.
TIP 18: JOURNALING
Have you ever practiced journaling before? Writing down your thoughts and feelings? This is a great way to get everything out of your mind and onto paper (it’s called brain dumping). You can even write letters to God, or prayers, or anything else as well. It is such a wonderful way to get creative and tune in to what is going on inside.
TIP 19: PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL
Proverbs 25:28 – “He that [hath] no rule over his own spirit [is like] a city [that is] broken down, [and] without walls”.
As I have mentioned before, even though we are saved, we are still living in the flesh and there will be temptations, we will stumble and we will continue to sin. But this doesn’t excuse us from intentionally sinning. There’s a difference. We need to practice self-control so that we are not controlled by the flesh, but rather, are guided by wanting to walk in the spirit with God. Stay in prayer, humble yourselves, stand strong in the faith and put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6) because the devil is going to find all ways possible to make you stumble or fall off the straight and narrow path.
The devil even tried to tempt Jesus Christ Himself when He went off into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. But He remained faithful and rebuked the devil for his attempts are trying to get Jesus to stumble. (Matthew 4:1-11).
TIP 20: PRACTICE CHRISTIAN AFFIRMATIONS
I believe that affirmations can be okay to practice, as long as they are Christian-based. I share Christian affirmations on my instagram here. When you are practicing Christian affirmations, they are allowing you to see and believe the truth about what God wants us to see and believe about ourselves. They are positive and encouraging; they uplift you in times of despair.
A few examples of Christian affirmations include: you are loved, you are worthy, you are chosen, you are born-again, you are a new creation, you have power and purpose.
