23 Simple Ways To Spend More Time With God
How do you start each day? What is the first thing that you tend to do in the morning? For me, I like to read the bible first thing. Lately, I believe that God has been waking me up earlier than usual so that I can spend more time in His Word. Because of this, I took it upon myself to start writing notes as I would read the Bible so that I would truly fill myself up and nourish my soul with His Word.
Starting your day with Jesus is the best thing that you can do! But it doesn’t end there…
We need to stay focused on Jesus throughout the day. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:31 that no matter what we eat or drink or do, we must give all the glory to God. When we are saved and become born-again, our lives change (and for the better). Our lives should be focused around Jesus and His Word. Similar to starting a friendship with someone new, you keep communicating with them, you keep seeing them and learning about who they are. You build upon that relationship with them.
Our relationship with Jesus is very similar to that of a friendship. It’s a two-way street. So we need to do everything we can to do our part in communicating with Him and learning more about Him.
In everything that you do, make sure that you put Jesus first and give Him all the glory!
So, just like a friendship, we need to stay consistent in communicating with the other person; We have to put in the effort. How much time do you spend with God each day? How often do you read and study The Bible? These are such important questions to ask yourself, and if you find yourself struggling with an appropriate answer, then let me tell you some simple ways to spend more time with God!
Here is a list of 23 simple ways to spend more time with God that you can start TODAY:
1. Set Aside Time Each Day To Spend Time With God
As I have mentioned earlier, every morning I wake up and spend time reading the Bible. This is something that I have been trying to do consistently for a while now, and lately God has been waking me up earlier to do it and I am so thankful for it. Set aside time each day that will work around you and stick to it. A good time to work this out is the night before.
2. Start Small
Start by putting aside 10-15 minutes a day to read the bible, listen to music, pray, and so on, so that you are spending at least some time with God. Start small and build yourself up from there.
3. Build A Routine To Spend Time With God
This is so very important. Building a routine that works around your day-to-day needs will encourage you to stay consistent and reach your goal which is ultimately to spend more time with God.
4. Cut Out Any Distractions
Do you find yourself easily distracted? Are you waking up each morning and checking your phone first thing before anything else? Find out what kind of distractions there are and learn to cut them out.
5. Make The Bible A Priority To Read
One of the most important things that we can do as Christians is to make sure that we are prioritizing reading the Bible. Do this by following a study guide or how to read the bible in a year. Find something that works well for you so that you can consistently read the Bible each day and get closer to God.
6. Listen To The Audio Bible
If you are struggling to read the Bible consistently, another alternative is listening to an audio Bible. This is perfect for when you are busy or are out and about such as driving or exercising and want something to listen to. I used to do this whilst exercising.
7. Stay In Prayer
The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (along with Philippians 4:6 and Ephesians 6:18) to stay in prayer, to pray without ceasing and let your requests be made known to God. Make sure that you are always praying to God and communicating with Him each day. Praying is a direct form of communication between yourself and God that will strengthen your trust and faith in Him.
There are so many times when I used to find myself talking to myself, before I realized that I can take those moments and talk to God instead. Now, if there is anything that I need to say out aloud or get off my chest or think about, I just talk to God as if He is right there standing beside me.
8. Take Advantage of Small Lulls In The Day
Ever find yourself with an extra few minutes in the day? Not sure on what to do during these lulls? Why not take this opportunity to spend some time with God?! Make the most of it. Let every minute count.
9. Listen To Worship Music
I absolutely love listening to Christian music and worship songs. By listening, singing along and even dancing helps us praise God and focus on Him and all that He has done for us. Find some great music to listen to that has powerful lyrics to connect you with God on a more personal level. My favorite artist is: Matty Mullins. King David wrote Psalms as musical lyrics to God, and there is even mentions of dancing and praising God in the Bible here: 2 Samuel 6:14; Exodus 15:20; Jeremiah 31:4 and 1 Chronicles 15:29.
10. Practice Bible Journaling
Have you ever seen people highlight and write in their Bibles? This isn’t something that I do, but it is becoming more common for Christians to engage in Bible Journaling. This can be a great idea to try out when you read your Bible because you are focusing more on what it is saying as you highlight and write notes along the sides of the pages.
11. Read Out Aloud
Something that helps me stay focused and engaged is to read out aloud. It helps you to purely focus on what you are saying rather than any other distractions that are happing around you. This is a great idea for those who get easily distracted by simply just reading the Bible.
12. Write Notes Whilst Studying The Bible
This is my personal favorite! Every morning when I read the Bible, I write down a bunch of notes! It helps me to remember what I have read and also to learn more about what God is telling me through His Word. Another tip is to pray before you read the Bible and ask for the Holy Spirit to guide you. The Holy Spirit will give you the truth in what you are reading to help you understand it better.
13. Pray Over Your Home/Household
Every night before bed I pray over my home/household. This is a great way to put your faith and trust in God as you ask for His protection. Check out why it is important to pray over your home here.
14. Share The Gospel With Your Children
Every night before bed my daughter says her prayers. I taught her how to pray and I guide her if she makes any kind of mistakes/forgets. When she is a little older, I will be teaching her all about God and the Bible. Sharing the gospel with your children is of paramount importance as a Christian parent. It encourages your children to learn about the faith and encourages you to spend this time talking about God.
15. Practice Gratitude Daily
Gratitude is such a great way to spend time with God because you are literally focusing on and being thankful for all the things that God has done for you and provided you with. Christian gratitude allows us be content in all things and to humble ourselves before God. If you are stuck on how to practice gratitude, go here! Want to learn more about what Christian gratitude is all about and ways to be thankful to God, check this out.
16. Go To Church/Bible Study To Spend More Time With God
Do you attend Church or a Bible study group? This is a cool way to spend time with God, whilst also gaining fellowship with other Christians. It is a great way to meet like-minded individuals and to focus on God during these times. If you are unable to attend Church, there are plenty of sermons online that you can listen to 🙂
17. Preach The Gospel To Others
Jesus told His disciples to go out into the world and preach the gospel to every creature. By preaching the Word to others, we are spending time with God. He is always with us and watching over us. Through the Holy Spirit, He is guiding us to preach to others and guides us on what we need to say. Just like when Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will help us with what we need to say, especially in times of trials.
18. Practice Journaling
Practicing journaling can help you draw closer to God as you pour out all that is going on in your mind, on paper. Make sure to think about God and write about Him when you are practicing journaling.
19. Pray For Your Family/Friends And Others
How often do you pray for others? I make sure to pray for my friends and family when I say my nightly prayers. Praying for others allows you to spend time with God by talking to Him and thinking about the ones you love.
20. Create A Prayer Journal
A really great way to keep track of who to pray for and/or when you want to pray is to create a prayer journal. I made one years ago and would ask my followers how I could pray for them. I would write down their requests so that I could remember to pray for them.
21. Listen To A Christian Podcast Whilst Driving
Podcasts are becoming a big thing now, especially in the Christian community. I am even thinking of creating one in the future myself. Thoughts? Anyway… whilst I do not know of any great podcasters, YET, feel free to ask other Christians and see who they recommend that you listen to and give it a go! Play it whilst driving!
22. Blog About God!
Why not start a Christian blog? It is a great way to focus your time and energy about God in the moment when writing about Him and also encourages you to connect with other Christian bloggers. This is one of the reasons as to why I started blogging. I want to be able to share the truth of the Bible with others and encourage Christian women to be strong, honorable and faithful to God.
Every time I sit down to write these blog posts, all I am thinking about is Him.
23. Seek God’s Guidance
Lastly, seek God’s guidance. If you are struggling, or need extra support, talk to God, pray to Him, ask for His help and guidance on finding ways to spend more time with Him. He loves you and cares for you; He is always there to listen to you and help you.

This is such a wonderful list of ways to spend time with God. Too often, we complicate this and feel like if we can’t spend an hour in our devotional time in the morning we can’t connect with Him at all. But there are so many ways to build a relationship throughout the day!

Yes absolutely, we don’t need to complicate it. Well said, Karen!
This is a fantastic list! There’s a little black book put out by Sensus Traditions Press that is full of deliverance prayers. In it is a perimeter prayer I say over our home and for my family every night before bed. There’s too much going on in our world today to not.
I haven’t heard of that book before, but thank you for letting me know. Yes so true. Prayer is so important!
I know for me that waking up and praying first thing in the morning helps 🙂
