Mother’s Day is coming up in a couple of months, and I thought it would be such a wonderful time to look at the characteristics of a Godly mom.
When you think of the words, ‘Godly mom’, what comes to mind? To me, I think of someone like the Proverbs 31 woman, Mary, Jochebed, Hannah, and various other different mothers in the Bible who feared the Lord and put their faith and trust in God alone. When I think of a Godly mom, I think of someone who finds their strength in Christ alone, and follows God’s Word and Will in their lives. She is someone who doesn’t bend to the ways of the world and will stand strong in her convictions. This Godly mom loves her family and raises her children right in the Lord.

What Are The Characteristics of a Godly Mom?
-
She Fears God
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: But a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised” – Proverbs 31:30
A mother who fears God understands what it means to be a true follower of Christ. Fearing God is the beginning of wisdom and understanding. Fearing God is a praiseworthy characteristic of a woman.
2. She Is Guided by the Lord
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” – Psalm 32:8
A Godly mother will put her trust in God alone and let Him guide the way in all aspects of her life. She follows His plan for her and submits to His Will in her life.
3. She Studies the Bible Daily
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” – 2 Timothy 2:15
She studies the Bible daily to show herself approved unto God. She feeds her soul daily by nourishing herself with the Word of God. She enjoys studying and learning more about what God says in the Bible, and how she can incorporate it into her own life.
4. She is a Strong Prayer Warrior
“Pray without ceasing” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
No matter who the person is, this Godly mom will pray for that individual. She prays for her family, her friends, even her enemies. She stays in prayer because she knows that prayer is such a powerful weapon against the enemy. Prayer is the direct form of communication between herself and God. It is a way for her to draw closer to Him and strengthen her relationship with Him.
5. She Puts Her Faith and Trust in God Alone
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” – Proverbs 3:5
This mother puts her faith and trust in God alone. She does not find anything in this world that is trustworthy or worthy of her faith and attention. She loves the Lord with all her heart and knows that His ways are better than her own.
6. She Shows the Fruits of the Spirit
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” – Galatians 5:22-23
There are several fruits of the spirit mentioned in Galatians and these are such important characteristics that we should all strive towards and do/follow in our lives. A Godly mother shows the fruits of the Spirit in all that she does, think and say.
7. She Does God’s Will in Her Life
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” – Romans 12:2
A Godly mom knows that God has created her uniquely and perfectly with a wonderful plan and purpose in her life. She does not want to follow the ways of the world; she actively pursues the Lord each day, doing His Will in her life, and not her own.
8. She Has a Pure Heart
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” – Matthew 5:8
There are no evil, wicked, vengeful thoughts or feelings in her heart. She sincerely loves others and cares for others. Her heart is pure.
9. She Has Only Good Intentions for Her Family
“Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her” – Proverbs 31:28
There are no bad intentions for her family, she only has good intentions. She loves her family, her children, her husband (if married) and does so much for them. She takes care of her family.
10. She is Content
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” – Philippians 4:11
Contentment is so important, especially when it comes to growing closer to God. Paul said that no matter what state he was in, he was content. We need to be content in all things, no matter what. No matter what you are going through, the struggles you and your family are facing, always stay content and have faith.
11. She Raises Her Children Right In The Lord
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” – Proverbs 22:6
It is important know how to raise our children right in The Lord. Whether it comes to discipline or teaching our children about God and the Bible and Creation from young, as long as the foundation for all that we do and say and teach our children is the Bible.
12. She Builds Up Her Home
“Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands” – Proverbs 14:1
A woman of God will build up her home. She does not wish to tear it down. What does this mean though? We are creating a space that is filled with love and support. Our homes are a place where people grow and learn. Everything that we do is to be done with love, especially when it comes to our family – our children. There is no hatred, resentment, bitterness, or any kind of negative environment created in the home.
13. She Accepts the Biblical Roles in the Family
“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body” – Ephesians 5:23
There are Biblical roles in every household. The husband is the head of the wife and Christ is the head of the household. It is important to understand and accept these Biblical roles. “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God” – 1 Corinthians 11:3.
14. She Prays Over Her Home
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” – Philippians 4:6.
Praying over your home is something that we should all be doing as Christians. From anointing our homes to praying over our home and household each night. Christian mothers will pray for their homes as they know that God is the head of her household and is the family’s protector and provider.
15. She is Selfless
“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil” – Luke 6:35.
You care about others, especially your family. You put the needs of others above your own when it is most important. You take the time to care for and look after your children. You care for others and show the love of Christ to others. You are a good Samaritan to those who are in need of help and support.
16. She is Patient
“But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it” – Romans 8:25.
Patience is such a virtue. Having patience as a mother is a strength in of itself. No matter what is going on, especially over the things that you cannot control, always be patient. Even when it comes to unanswered prayers. Never rush God and His perfect timing.
17. She is Wise and Kind
“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness” – Proverbs 31:26.
Be kind to others. Show love and respect. You have wisdom from God. You seek truth and knowledge from the Word of God.
18. She is Humble
“For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” – Luke 14:11.
When you look at the general definition of humility, it means to be modest and not think highly of yourself. But when it comes to the Biblical defintion of humility, it is fearing God. It is not being filled with pride. You humble yourself before the Lord and acknowledge His authority and power. Being a humble Christian means to truly submit to God.
19. She is Dedicated and Determined
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” – Romans 12:1
Be dedicated to your faith in God. Be dedicated to presenting yourselves a living sacrifice to do the will of God in your life. You are determined to stay on the straight and narrow, following God and His perfect Will for your life.
You are dedicated to your family and are determined to do what that which is right for your children.
20. She is Nurturing
“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” – Ephesians 6:4
Being a good mother means you are nurturing; you take care of your children. There is love and happiness and peace in the home. You are there for your children as they grow up, and you make the right decisions to protect them.
The scripture above mentions fathers, but it can also relate to mothers as well. Do not provoke your children to anger/wrath. Bring them up in the nurture and admonition of God.
21. She Shows Forgiveness
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” – Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness is a very important part of the Christian walk. We need to show forgiveness towards others, the same way that God forgives us. We shouldn’t be holding grudges or seeking vengeance upon others. Be kind, loving and forgiving towards others.
22. She is Slow to Anger
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” – James 1:19
Be slow to anger. Even though life is filled with struggles and difficulties, we need to make sure that we are not provoking our children to anger, or being so quick to anger ourselves. Give it all to God in prayer when things get too overwhelming or frustrating. Have a more calm, content mindset and response to things, rather than being quick to being filled with anger.
23. She Loves Her Husband
“That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” – Titus 2:4-5
24. She Does Not Compare Herself to Other Moms
“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” – 2 Corinthians 10:12
There is no need to compare yourself to others. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side; the grass is greener where you water it.
God created YOU uniquely from anyone else. There is no one else like you. He created YOU with a perfect plan and purpose for your life and that is so amazing.
He made you a mother and this is the plan that He has set out for you. Don’t compare yourself to other moms on social media. Don’t compare yourself to other moms at Church or in general. They are living their lives, and you should be focused on living yours. God does not make mistakes.
25. She Shows the Love of Christ
“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God” – Ephesians 3:19
Be filled with the Holy Spirit and share the love of Christ with others. Love others the same way that God loves you. Love your neighbors as yourself. God is love and shares the perfect depiction of what true, unconditional love is.
