35 Powerful Bible Verses About Having Strength In God
Where does your strength come from as a Christian? Is it from your own self, or do you find strength in God?
To start off, the word strength itself is found 242 times in the KJV Bible (which is what I use). The word strength in Biblical terms means to have power, or endurance to get through all hardships in the Christian life.
But where does this strength come from? Does God give us this kind of strength to endure all things, when we are created? Or is it something that is earned or perhaps found?
How Do We Get Strength From God?
The Bible tells us that the strength that we have is not our own; it comes from God (Philippians 4:13). God’s strength is shown in many different ways including His acts towards us, His plans for us, and His promises for us.
God created a new covenant for us, with Jesus as the mediator. This new covenant is where someone who comes to Christ, believes on Him, and is saved, receives redemption for their sins, and the free gift of salvation which is eternal life in Heaven (Hebrews 9:15).
When we are saved, we are born-again, and are a new creation unto Him. We are now living in the spirit and the flesh with the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us. Salvation is by grace through faith, and not of works. We are unable to save ourselves from the punishment and judgment of our sins. This is where God’s strength shines through as He is able to save us, or to destroy us (James 4:12).
Through our relationship with God, He has the ability to strengthen us, protect us, sustain us and guide us on the right path. God’s strength works through those who are faithful towards Him (Psalm 28:7).
What Happens When We Are Weak?
We are weak (Mark 14:38), compared to the power and strength that Christ has. Because we are still living in the flesh on Earth, we are still exposed to sin and temptation. However, the inherent weakness in the flesh is where Jesus’s power (strength) truly shines through (2 Corinthians 12:9).
We are unable to go through the trials and tribulations alone. It is through the strength of God, that we are able to endure. The closer you get to God, the stronger your faith becomes. The stronger your faith becomes, there is more power and strength that God uses through His faithful servants.
The more you choose to deny the desires of the flesh and ignore the temptations of sins, the more spiritual attacks you will get from the devil. The more you are getting spiritual attacked, the more confirmation you have that you are on the right path; on the straight and narrow. It means that you are doing the right thing, living your life for Christ.
Why Does God Give Us Strength?
There are several reasons as to why we need God’s strength as a Christian. For starters, without His strength, we are unable to face persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). God’s strength allows us to do His Will in our lives (Romans 12:2), to share the gospel and serve others (1 Peter 4:10), and to demonstrate God’s grace and mercy towards us (1 John 1:9).
Our strength in God allows us to focus more on Him, and less on ourselves (in a prideful manner), or this world. We can truly depend on Him, live a life filled with His glory, and to grow in our relationship with Christ.
Bible Stories About God Giving Us Strength
Read the story of David and Goliath. It is such an amazing story about the amount of faith and trust that David had with God. David was still in his youth when he fought against Goliath (a giant from the Philistines). David had such confidence in his faith with God, knowing that our God is greater than any giants we face. He didn’t concern himself or talk about how big or strong or scary Goliath was. He spoke about how great and powerful our God is.
David knew that God was on his side. He believed that he was going to be victorious over this giant. Nothing changed his mind when confronting Goliath. David ran towards Goliath at full speed with no sword in his hand. He killed Goliath with a smooth rock that he flung at his head with his sling shot.
God gave David the strength that he needed to win the battle against Goliath. David knew that God is bigger and greater than this giant. God is bigger and greater than any of the giants we face. We need to stop focusing on the giants ahead of us, and keep our focus on our God who is behind us in the battles we face.
Normally, you would think that a rock would not defeat such a giant man in battle. There was no way that this could have happened. The reason why it did though, was because of the power and strength that God had given David to win the battle. This strength was given to David because of his faith in God alone.
