5 Important Reasons to Trust God’s Timing
How many times do you hear the words “it is all in God’s timing.” Or how about, “God’s timing is perfect.” But have you ever stopped to consider what God’s timing really is? Before we jump into reasons why we should trust in His timing, perhaps we should take a look at what it means first.
God is Outside of Time
[Psalm 90:2] says, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
What this means is that if you were to draw a line starting from the moment God created the heavens and the earth onwards, God is standing above that line. Everything else that happens in this world takes place on the timeline except for God’s existence. He has always been and will always be. Therefore when we think about God’s timing, we must remember that He sees the beginning, middle and end of our lives and all that we do within our lifespan and beyond.
God’s Timing Isn’t For Us to Figure Out
It isn’t a mystery to be solved nor is meant to be a distraction to make you guess and wonder about what God might be doing in your life. We cannot change or manipulate His timing because His timing
is His alone.
God’s timing is simply put, “God’s way of moving in your life, when He wants and
however He wants.”
Now that we understand what God’s timing is, let’s look at the many reasons we should trust God’s timing.
5 Reasons to Trust God’s Timing
1. God Can Be Trusted
One of the best reasons we can trust God’s timing is because we can trust Him completely, not just His timing. I want you to recall a moment in your life when God was faithful. Do you remember how you felt as you realized God had your situation in the palm of his Hand?
Let me tell you about a time God was faithful to me. A few years ago I was working in a contract job which I loved dearly. After 18 months, my contract ended and I was let go. I wept and mourned the loss of a job that I truly loved but I also wept at the thought of what it would mean to live without a paycheck.
I had just purchased my first home and with a mortgage to pay and no money coming in; I cried out to God for help. Within one week, I had a LinkedIn request asking me if I would be interested in interviewing for a similar job. Long story short, I was given a new role and gained a whole new skill set in the process. You see, God didn’t give me what I wanted. But He provided. Even when I was busy worrying about how to make ends meet, He already had a plan for me. God can be trusted not only because he provides, but because of who He is and who He is, will never change. The fact that we can trust in the consistency of God means we can trust His timing also.
2. God is Omniscient
Remember how I mentioned that God sees our entire lives and the timeline the entire world sits on? This makes God’s timing far superior because He knows everything and I mean every…single… thing… about you. He knows the number of hairs on your head [Jeremiah 1:5] and He knows your desires, your needs, your hopes and dreams. He has all the knowledge and sees your future when you cannot.
I am reminded of the Romans during the age of the diabolical ruler, Nero. If you recall, Nero was the emperor of Rome around 64 A.D. when he began torturing Christians. He would spear their bodies, douse them in tar and light them on fire as lamp posts to light up the streets of Rome. If you were living in that time you certainly wouldn’t be able to see why this was happening. It wouldn’t make sense. But as a result of this taking place, Christians began to flee in order to escape a similar fate and they entered into unknown lands bringing the Gospel with them. Years and years later, we have the Gospel in almost every nation.
You see, God saw the bigger picture and His timing far surpassed theirs. They had no idea that Nero persecuting Christians would result in having the gospel in places it had never been before but God needed them to undergo trials in order to use them. So be encouraged friend! You may not understand why something is taking place or not happening for you, but God sees your bigger picture and is using you in a mighty way.
3. God Does Not Make Mistakes
I think sometimes it is easy to feel as though you will never get that one thing you desire because you’ve been waiting for so long and there seems to be no end in sight. We all desire things for ourselves so when things don’t happen when we want them to, it is all too easy to take on the mentality that it will just never happen.
I’m here to tell you that you should never make God so small. He is the God of the universe who put the stars in the sky, who parted the Red Sea, and who raised Lazarus from the dead. Therefore, He is capable of anything He wants to do. If He wanted you to have your desire right now, you would have it.
God does not make mistakes. Is it possible you are asking for a mistake? Have you ever looked back and felt a wave of gratitude that God did not give you what you asked for? This is how good our God is.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” [Isaiah 55:9-9.]
How comforting to know that our God is intentional in the way He moves and that He has never once made a misstep. Throughout all of history not one time has God ever been like, “oops, I should have done this instead.” You can be confident that our God knows exactly what He is doing because history proves that His ways are always higher than ours.
4. God Still Blesses Us In The Waiting
The other day I was speaking with a friend of mine who felt as though nothing in her life was going well. As we know, comparison is the enemy of joy and I was listening to my friend describe how she was not in a career she enjoyed, couldn’t find a man worth dating, lacked fellowship in the church she desperately tried to be a part of and yet nothing was improving. I think we all can relate on some level because nothing is ever the way we want things to be, especially when we see others around us living the kind of lives we could only dream about.
It’s disheartening to wait and even more disheartening to watch others have what we desire. BUT! God is so good because he STILL blesses us even if those blessings do not come in the package we think they ought to come in or look the way we want them to. So I asked her to take the next week to highlight each blessing God placed in front of her no matter how big or how small it may seem.
One week later she texted me a full list that required scrolling for quite awhile. She had listed everything from a chance encounter with an old friend, healing for a neighbor, a paid-for cup of coffee and the list went on. My point is that sometimes we get so focused on what we are waiting for that we miss all these little blessings that God wants to give us. If we make a conscious effort to look for how God chooses to bless us, it makes trusting God’s timing a little easier.
5. God Wants HIS Best For You
The last reason you should confidently trust in God’s timing is because God does not withhold anything that would serve you well. [Psalm 84:11 says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.] This means that God is not punishing you for your sins by keeping his best and greatest blessings from you.
As we’ve established above, God is your provider. Therefore, He will give you what you need and when His time is right, He will bless you with your desires as long as they align with His will for your life. To illustrate this, I want you to think of a child who wants nothing more than to drive a car. The parent knows and understands this desire but the child is not ready yet. Imagine if the parent were to say “ok kid, here are the keys, be back by midnight!” and allows the child to take off without proper education or experience. Disaster would strike and ultimately bring devastation to that young child’s life.
God is the same way when we ask for certain things. He knows we need to wait even though we think we are ready. When it is His timing, it is God’s absolute best being handed over to you so that only HE can get the glory. Not you, not anybody else and isn’t that our highest purpose? To bring Him glory? In that way, trusting in God’s timing means we bring him glory and accomplish our greatest mission on earth. The blessings are just a bonus.
