7 Powerful Ways To Deal With Anxiety As A Christian (Especially when you’re struggling!)
Has anyone ever questioned your faith before once they found out that you’re a Christian AND suffer from anxiety? That people seem so quick to label you as a “false believer” or someone who is “lacking faith”?
Well I’m here to tell you that there is no perfect Christian. We are ALL sinners and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
There are more people in this world who are Christian and deal with anxiety than people might think.
I am one of those people.
I have been dealing with anxiety as long as I can remember. And I am here to say that you are not alone.
Examples of Mental Health in the Bible
Mental health shouldn’t be such a taboo topic in the Christian community. Neither should it be so degrading amongst Christians who have to deal with the criticism of others, especially those of the faith.
If you take a look in the Bible, you will see examples of different people who dealt with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
- Jonah was anxious about God sending him to Ninevah to preach to the Ninevites.
- Job was anxious, and even depressed, after losing many personal possessions, and even all of his children.
- Moses felt wearied and overwhelmed when God came to him and told him to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.
- Elijah fled into the wilderness after Jezebel sought vengeance upon him. He felt depressed and even suicidal.
- Even King David, a notorious character in the Bible who was “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22) suffered with anxiety and despair. When you read various Psalms that he wrote, King David went through a lot of troubling times, despite him being well-known for a strong warrior of God.
God doesn’t love you any less for feeling anxious or afraid. He can still use you for His purpose and Will in your life (Romans 8:28).
You can manage and even overcome these hardships with the help and guidance of The Lord Almighty. He is always there for you. God will never leave you nor forsake you.
God does not promise us an easy life. The Christian walk is an uphill battle. But God gives us the greatest tools that we can use to overcome these obstacles and difficulties in our walk with Christ.
>>> We have The Bible and prayer <<<
Let’s take a look at some Biblical ways to overcome anxiety as a Christian (even when we are struggling!)
7 Powerful Ways to Deal with Anxiety as a Christian
-
Turn to The Lord in Prayer
Prayer is the greatest tool that we have to communicate with Our Creator. There is nothing that we cannot say to God, for He knows our thoughts and even the thoughts of our thoughts (Psalm 139). He already knows what we are going to talk about with Him in prayer before we even start.
But it is still important to turn to The Lord in prayer and let it all be known unto Him. He wants to hear from us. He loves us and even tells us to let our requests be known to Him (Philippians 4:6).
The tricky part is letting go once we have prayed about it. I know it is easier said than done, but it is something that takes a lot of time and practice when it comes to anxiety.
You may still feel overwhelmed, even after prayer. You may still think about or dwell on those anxious thoughts and feelings you were dealing with.
The best thing you can teach yourself is to let go and let God handle it. It is now in The Lord’s hands.
2. Read Your Bible
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” – 2 Timothy 3:16
Whenever you are having a hard day, or struggling with ongoing anxiety, reading the Bible always helps. Even if you can spend just a few minutes each day reading a few scriptures or chapters, meditating on His Word and filling up your mind with God’s Word.
3. Memorize Scripture
When Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days, Satan tried to tempt Him. Do you remember how Jesus responded? He quoted scripture. He used the Word of God to rebuke the devil and shut down those temptations.
Memorizing scripture and filling our mind with The Word will encourage us to dwell on the scriptures, rather than on those anxious thoughts and feelings.
Even in moments of weakness, when we are feeling afraid or anxious, and the devil tries to swoop in and attack or tempt us, having our minds filled with scripture and knowing what The Word says is very important in this mental battle.
4. Listen to Worship Music
Listening to worship music always puts me in a good mood. Not only is it a wonderful way to communicate with and worship Our God, but it also helps calm the mind.
5. Connect with Your Community
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” – James 5:16
If you are struggling with anxiety, or any other kind of mental health issues, it is important to surround yourself with others who will support you and lift you up. Whether it is attending Church, Bible study, or finding like-minded individuals who will be there for you and pray for you.
6. Practice Journaling
Have you ever practiced journaling before? Writing things down can help with those anxious thoughts and attacks that you may be experiencing. Journaling is a great way to unload all that is going on in the mind, and letting it all out on paper.
A great tip when it comes to journaling is looking back at all that you have written down and realizing that there is so much that you cannot control, and no need to worry over.
Cross out anything that you cannot control yourself, and focus on the things that you can. It is such a huge time-waster when we concern ourselves with things that are out of our hands.
Once you give it to The Lord in prayer, you can also cross out those things too, because it is now in God’s hands.
7. Change Your Mindset
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” – Romans 12:2.
Satan’s target is your mind. He will try to fill your mind with anxious, negative thoughts, and lies too.
This is why it is important to fill your mind with the Word of God. That way you will no longer have any room left for satan’s lies.
When we work on changing our mindset, it is something that takes a lot of time and discipline. Whenever there is a scenario that comes up that we usually worry over or obsess about, we need to be able to say to ourselves, “no, I will no longer worry about or obsess over this thought/feeling/situation”.
We need to cast out those negative thoughts and feelings in the name of Jesus (2 Corinthians 10:5).
This takes a lot of practice. But when you start to get the hang of things, you will be able to change the way you think and feel about certain things that used to concern you or fill your mind with anxiety.
Final Thoughts About Overcoming Anxiety As A Christian
If you are someone who struggles with fear or anxiety, it isn’t necessarily going to go away completely. It will always come up in different situations, but once you learn to master your mindset and response to these kinds of situations, then it won’t affect you nearly as much as it used to.
These tips are some wonderful ways to help you change your mindset and response to anxious thoughts/feelings and situations that will come about in your life.
The devil will try to use these moments to attack you, or bring you down, but as long as you pray to God, read and memorize scripture and keep focusing on the right things, you will overcome those spiritual battles in the mind.
I pray that these words encourage you today to actively work on changing your mindset and overcome anxiety. Keep focusing on God. Stay in prayer, remain faithful unto God, and let Him handle it.
There is nothing that God cannot do.
