7 Wonderful Ways to Draw Closer to God Each Day
One of the things that so many Christians want to know and achieve is how to get closer to God. True Biblical Christianity is a relationship, not a religion. We desire to follow the Word of God in our lives and want to better understand who God is.
Similar to any other friendship/relationship we have, communication is key. A real friendship is a two-way street. They will contact you and want to see you and have you in their lives, same with you wanting that person in yours. God wants a relationship with us. He desires to communicate with you and for you to talk to Him, have Him in your life, and to get to know Him better. So what are some ways that we can communicate with God and have this relationship with Him?
How to Communicate with God
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” – 2 Timothy 3:16
First things first, we have the Bible, which is the living, breathing Word of God. This is where we primarily hear from Him. Then, to continue getting to know God and communicating with Him, we have prayer. Prayer is the direct form of communication between yourself and God.
There are other ways to connect with God, aside from reading the scriptures and praying to Him each day. We want to learn how to draw closer to Him in truth and spirit. We want to be filled with the Holy Spirit and feel this connection that we have with Him. Plus, we also want to make sure that we know for sure that we are hearing from God (this is where you need to test the spirits).
When you hear from God, it comes with peace and confirmation. There is a loving-kind tone to His Words and presence. But if it is the devil, it is the opposite. This is because the devil likes to put fearful, anxious thoughts and feelings in your mind, making you doubt yourself, and what God says to you as well.
So, when you want to hear from God, make sure that you know the difference between God’s voice, and the devil’s. Reading the scriptures and learning about God’s personality will help you better understand how to recognize His voice.
How to Hear from God
Just like I said before, a relationship is a two-way street. God is always there for us and ready to hear from us and talk to us, but we also have to put in the effort too. So, if you want to draw closer to God, and learn more about Him and feel more connected to Him, then you need to be reading the Bible each day, staying in prayer with God, and also spending time being still.
“Be still, and know that I am God:” (Psalm 46:10(a)).
Often, we spend so much time doing the talking in prayer to God, that we forget to pause, and give Him a chance to respond. After you read the Bible, or after you pray, practice being still in the presence of the Lord. Just sit there for 10 minutes or something and close your eyes and ask for God to speak to you. Get away from any distractions and find a quiet place to stop and be still. See what God has to say. He might put something on your mind or heart, or you might be able to hear from Him audibly. Ask for God to speak to you. Quiet your mind so that you can hear what He has to say.

7 Ways to Draw Closer to God
In order to better understand who God is and why He created us, we have to study the scriptures. This is where we will hear from The Lord. All of the answers to our questions are written in His Word. Now that we understand that God wants a relationship with us, and how to talk to Him, hear from Him and be still in His presence…

Practicing Gratitude
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”.
In everything that we go through – the trials we experience and seasons we are placed in, we must always give thanks to God. Practicing gratitude helps us draw closer to God as we come to appreciate all of the blessings that God has given us. It also allows us to see how God has always been there for us and helped us in times of need.
Time and time again God has always been there for you. He has never left you nor forsaken you. Some battles we face are harder than others. Some trials and struggles, or even seasons, last longer than we’d like them too. But there is a reason and a purpose for everything that happens in our lives. Start practicing gratitude daily. This will not only encourage you to feel more content in your life, but also humble yourself before God. We don’t always understand why things are happening or why we have to wait so long for what seems like unanswered prayers, but that is where we need to be patient and trust God more.
2. Staying in Prayer
1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing”.
Never stop praying. Always talk to God. He already knows what you are going through, and what you are about to face. So you can trust that He will always have your back. If you want to draw closer to Him, you need to communicate with Him more, but also spend more time being still and letting Him respond, too.
Prayer is more powerful than so many of us think, especially when we speak scripture out aloud and claim the promises of God in our lives. From praying for one another, to praying over people and situations, it is such a strong tool that we as Christians have to not only draw closer to God, but to protect us from spiritual warfare.
3. Studying and Meditating on the Scriptures
Psalm 19:14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer”.
Having head-knowledge as a Christian is one thing, but to read and memorize scripture, then meditate on it, is to bring the Word of God into your mind and heart, too. The word meditate means to murmur, speak, and muse over. When we read the scriptures, we should be musing over it; thinking about the words that God has shared with us and dig deeper into its meaning to help us grow and mature in the faith. This will essentially help us feel closer to God.
4. Asking to be Filled with the Holy Spirit Daily
Ephesians 5:18-20 – “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”
When you spend time with God, ask for Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit each day. Pray for God to open your eyes and to have a fresh view on the scriptures you will read. Let the Comforter (the Holy Spirit) dwell within you as you spend time with God and get to know Him better .
5. Sharing the Gospel with Others
Mark 16:15 – “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”.
The greatest gift that has ever been given to man is the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. When someone accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, the angels in Heaven rejoice. Similar to the way you felt when you first got saved, we also want others to feel the same way. By sharing the Gospel with others, and encouraging others to give their life to Christ, will help us feel closer to God. This is what God’s Will is for all of us. And when we are fulfilling God’s Will in our lives, we are essentially drawing closer to Him in the spirit.
6. Worship and Praise
Isaiah 42:8 – “I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images”.
Put on some hymns or Godly music and just spend time worshipping and praising the Lord. He deserves ALL of the glory! It is another fantastic way to spend time with The Lord.
7. Living and Walking in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 – “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh”.
Deny the flesh. Put on the new man each day. We cannot fulfill God’s desires when we are walking in the flesh. We must walk in the Spirit and do what God wants us to do in our lives. Follow Jesus, not man. Follow the Word, not the world. Always focus on things above. This will keep you drawn to God, and the more you do it, the easier it becomes, plus it will also strengthen your trust and faith in God, too.
How Will You Be Drawing Closer to God Today?
What things will you choose to do today, and every other day for that matter, to draw closer to Him? What are some ways that you know will serve and please the Lord? How will you deny the desires of the flesh and actively walk in the Spirit, focusing on things above?
I encourage you to keep reading your Bible, spending time with God each day. Do it with intent. Don’t just merely pick up your Bible and read a few verses or chapters. Really dive deep into the Word, meditate on the scriptures, and pray for the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you on your walk each day. God loves you and is always there for you. If you desire a stronger relationship with Him, then you need to put in the effort. It is a two-way street. God is omnipresent, meaning that He is always present with us. There is never a time when we are alone. There are no excuses. Talk to Him, walk with Him and be led by Him daily.
God Bless.
