Can I Be A Proverbs 31 Woman If I’m Single?
This can be a challenging question for many Christian woman to answer. Society has changed so much over the years, with less women getting married, and having children, for instance. More and more women are deciding to be independent, or have simply not found the one yet. But do these single Christian women become disqualified from being classified as a Proverbs 31 woman? My answer is: no.
Take a look at me, for example. I am a single mom, and am a born-again, bible-believing Christian, who thrives to become a Proverbs 31 woman. In my most recent post, I discuss how you can become a Proverbs 31 woman, especially if you are single, or don’t have children. Not every Christian woman is going to perfectly fit the role of a Proverbs 31 woman, and that’s okay. God has created us all uniquely and with special purposes for us on earth. We might not all get married, or have children. Besides, there is more to being a Proverbs 31 woman then being married or having children.
Proverbs 31 For Single Women
The idea of the Proverbs 31 woman is someone who is a strong believer, fears God, hard-working, married with children, runs the household, makes her own clothes, and works long hours (wakes up before the dawn, and even works into the night if need be). She has many skills which she would still have regardless of having a husband and children. She exercises her wisdom (given to her by God) in everything that she does in her life.
Take a closer look at all of the virtues that are listed in Proverbs 31 here. You will find that there are many attributes of a Proverbs 31 woman that Christian women can fulfill, through our faith in God. God creates us into His image (Genesis 1:27). We are to do everything in accordance to His Will and not our own (Romans 12:2). Christ lives within us (Galatians 2:20) and through Him we are guided to do God’s work (all of which is different to one another).
Most importantly though, there was not one perfect Christian woman in the Bible. The woman at the well was divorced several times, Mary Magdalene and Rahab were prostitutes, Mary was very young, Elizabeth was too old. The list goes on. The idea of becoming the perfect Proverbs 31 woman is not the way to see this, but rather, to adopt the characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman into our lives, the best way that we can.
What Does Proverbs 31 Mean For Single Women?
There is something that all of these Christian woman have in common.
In Proverbs 31:30, the Bible reads: “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised”.
Fearing God is the beginning of wisdom. It helps us strengthen our faith in God and allows us to love and obey Him. This is similar to a child who does not want to disrespect his/her parents by disobeying them, because they do not want to displease their parents.
By fearing God, it shapes us into this idea of the Proverbs 31 woman because we genuinely want to do everything we can in our lives to serve God and to please Him. The foundation for everything that the Proverbs 31 woman did in her life was through her faith in God and fearing Him. Without this, nothing that we work for and aspire to do in our life would amount to anything, because we should be doing everything to glorify God.
Final Thoughts
Proverbs 31 is a beautiful chapter in the book of Proverbs because it truly depicts what a man should look for in a woman. It also helps Christian women to put God first and do everything in their lives to glorify and obey Him. Some might think that Proverbs 31 shouldn’t be seen as a “shopping guide for men” when choosing a wife, but I believe otherwise because the words written in Proverbs 31 was the advice that Bathsheba gave to King Solomon when finding an ideal wife.
But like I have said before, not every woman is going to perfectly fit the role of the ideal Proverbs 31 woman. God has a unique journey for all of us to take in our lives which might not include marriage or children. That is why we have to look at the deeper meaning behind the scriptures. Everything that this Proverbs 31 woman did in her life was to please God. Everything was done through her faith in God and fearing Him too. It gives us all a great reminder that no matter where are in life, as long as we do everything in accordance to God’s Will and not our own, and to love, fear and obey Him, then we are on the right path.
