How To Live Your Life Like Jesus
As Christians, we are called to follow Jesus. This means to follow in His footsteps; to live a life that reflects the life that Jesus lived when He was on Earth.
Jesus gave us the perfect example of how to live our lives in this world. From showing love and forgiveness towards others, to obeying and trusting God completely in all areas of our lives, no matter what is going on or what are experiencing.
We shouldn’t be turning to others, especially other Christians, as a guideline for our to be in this world. Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and He the only one who we should look up to.
How Do We Live Life Like Jesus?
God created us to serve and glorify Him, so in everything that we do, it should be for His glory and not our own. So in everything that you do, let it be to glorify God. In everything that you have, let it be for God’s glory. This sets the foundation for why and how we should live our lives.
God did not call us to fit in, but to stand out. He created us all with a unique plan and purpose for our lives. As long as we fully trust and submit to God and His plans, then things will all work out for the greater good.
The Christian life is an uphill battle. It isn’t going to be easy. We will go through many trials and tribulations in our lives. There will be hardships, heartbreak, pushback from the world, especially from family and friends for the life that we have chosen to live, spiritual warfare, and so on. The list is endless. But with God, there is nothing that is impossible for Him. Through His strength, we are able to endure all hardships.
What Does The Bible Say?
There are several scriptures in the Bible that help set the tone for how we are to live a life that is pleasing to God and one that reflects the life that Jesus lived here on Earth.
The Bible tells us that we are in this world but are not of this world. We should be set apart, and not live a life that is worldly or pleasing to others. We are called to be the light of the world, shining in the darkness.
We are not to conform to this world. The world and everything in it is self-serving, self-pleasing, and is essentially run by the devil, for he is the ‘god’ of this world.
Let’s look at the many different scriptures and thus ways to live life like Jesus in the modern world.
12 Ways To Live Your Life Like Jesus In The Modern World
-
Put God First
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you – Matthew 6:33
In order to live a life that honors God and highlights the ways that Jesus lived, we MUST put God first. In everything that we do, we need to put God first, no matter what. Our focus should always be on Him, and on nothing or no one else. This is of paramount importance. Seek God first.
2. Trust God No Matter What
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths – Proverbs 3:5-6.
Trusting God can be hard at times, especially when we are facing difficulties. But it is the right thing to do because we know that we serve an Almighty God who is always there for us, and can do amazing, wonderful, powerful things in our lives.
When we don’t put our trust in God, we tend to try and do things on our own, and trust that we will be okay without any help or support. But the problem with this is that we all fall short of the glory of God. We are still living in the flesh, doing everything we can to put on the new man each day and walk in the spirit. But we have our weaknesses; our flaws. We cannot trust ourselves to live a perfect, sinless life like Jesus did.
Now in saying that, Jesus is God in the flesh, so He was able to live a perfect, sinless life. This is something we would love to strive for, but we know that we cannot be completely sinless. However, we can always set the goal for living life in the spirit, denying the desires of the flesh each day and doing everything else that we can to honor God in all that we do.
Sin separates us from God. Sin also weakens the ability for the Holy Spirit to work in us. It is so important to work on any kind of struggles that we are facing, and to trust that God will help us through those dark times.
It is in trusting God completely where we show that we cannot do life on our own – we NEED Him daily.
3. Fully Surrender to God
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” – James 4:7
There is a rebellious nature inside all of us. For some, it may be bigger or stronger than others. It is in the flesh that we rebel against God and His desires for us in our lives. It is through sin that we rebel against the Lord. Just like a rebellious child or teenager who does things against their parents, we, too, will choose to do things that go against God.
But once we surrender ourselves to God, everything changes for the better. We are offering ourselves a living sacrifice to The Lord by showing Him that we no longer want to live in sin; we no longer want to live a life where we are constantly rebelling against God. There is a change inside of us where we truly wake up to what is going on and we no longer enjoy this life that we are living. It is through our faith alone that we are on our knees surrendering to The Lord and His Will.
Jesus came to Earth to fulfill the Will of God. God sent Jesus into the world to be the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Jesus did not stray from God. He kept on the straight and narrow, fulfilling what God intended for Him to do.
Jesus was tempted with sin – the devil tried to tempt Him. But He stood strong, and remained faithful to The Lord.
We, too, should stand strong in the Lord, remain faithful unto Him and surrender our all to Him.
4. Do God’s Will In Your Life
“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” – John 6:38
Jesus came to this Earth to do the Will of Our Heavenly Father. He had no intentions of doing things His own way
In order to be like Christ, we too, must submit to God and do His Will in our lives. It is about trusting that God has a greater plan for our lives, and knowing that with Him in control, all things will work out for the best.
5. Love Others
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” – John 13:34
Showing love towards others is of uttermost importance as a Christian. Jesus gives us the best example of how to love others, the same way that we are to love The Lord.
Jesus tells us to turn the other cheek, love our enemies and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
God is love, and He represents the perfect concept of what love is. God sent His one and only son into the world to die for all. Jesus took away the punishment for all of our sins that we deserve. Our debt has been wiped clean by the blood that He shed on the cross. This is true love.
God loves us unconditionally and eternally. The love that He shows us, and the love that we have for Him, should be the same for others – whether it is a friend, family member, neighbor, or even our enemies.
6. Show Kindness Towards Others
“And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself” – Luke 10:27
Kindness is another great attribute to have as a Christian, and it is so important to show kindness towards others. Jesus was very kind and loving towards others on Earth. Jesus lived a life of kindness through His actions and words. From teaching the people about the truth of God and the scriptures, healing the sick, feeding the hungry and caring for the children, His whole life, especially His ministry revolved around pure kindness towards mankind.
In our walk with Christ, let’s be kind and loving towards one another. Be charitable, slow to anger, kind with your actions and words towards others and live a life that pleases the Lord.
7. Be Forgiving
“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses” – Mark 11:25
Forgiveness is a hard concept to learn, especially as a new Christian, because in this world, true forgiveness isn’t always shown. People are used to staying angry with others, holding grudges and even seeking revenge (Romans 12:19).
But Jesus tells us to forgive one another of their trespasses, and in showing forgiveness, God will also forgive you.
God forgives us of our sins when we repent. He gives us a clean slate when we believe on The Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior. THAT in of itself is TRUE forgiveness. To be forgiven of all sins you have made in your life – past, present and future, is such an unfathomable concept to many.
As a Christian though, we understand the selfless act of Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross for our sins, and thus, can understand why it is important to show forgiveness towards others. We are no better than anyone else. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
8. Have a Powerful Prayer Life
Jesus had a powerful prayer life with God. Take a look at John 17, for example. This is where Jesus was praying to God right before He was arrested, whipped, beaten and then crucified. In verses 1-5 Jesus prayed about Him self. He asked God to be glorified as He was going to be sacrificed for the sins of the whole world. Anyone who chooses to believe on Him and all that He had done for us will receive the free gift of eternal life. In verses 6-19, Jesus prayed for His disciples, and then in verses 20-26, Jesus prayed for all believers.
Jesus would often go off alone to pray to God (Matthew 14:23). Jesus taught us how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13).
If you want to become a powerful Christian, have a powerful prayer life.
- It is God’s Will for us to pray (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
- God wants us to bring everything before Him (Philippians 4:6-7)
- God wants us to pray continually (Colossians 4:2)
- God reveals unknown things to us through prayer (Jeremiah 33:3)
- God wants us to stay in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
- God communicates with us through prayer (Mark 11:24)
- We are to pray for one another (James 5:16)
9. Study the Scriptures + Tell The Devil NO
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” – Matthew 4:1-4.
When Jesus went into the desert and fasted for 40 days, the devil tried to tempt Him to sin. And how did Jesus respond? He quoted scripture to rebuke the devil. Scripture is so powerful and it definitely helps us to rebuke the devil and cast him out when he is trying to come in and tempt us with sin/sinning.
Study the scriptures. Meditate on the Word of God. Reading scripture out aloud will help you tremendously when you are dealing with anxiety, fear, pain, stress or are simply in spiritual warfare against the devil.
To live life like Jesus we need to study and memorize scripture and believe how powerful the Word is.
10. Win The Battles In Your Mind
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” – 2 Corinthians 10: 3- 5
We are at war within ourselves each day. There is a spiritual battle going on in our minds. This is because the devil targets our mind. The battles in your mind are happening all the time with the amount of thoughts that enter in.
His weapon is to whisper lies about you that will fill up your mind. He wants you to think badly/negatively about yourself. He wants to keep you in that negative state of mind. The devil wants to distract you with those negative thoughts so that you will believe and obsess over them.
But do not give the devil even a second of your time. Do not entertain those negative thoughts and beliefs for even a moment. Cast down these imaginations. Cast out these negative thoughts in the name of Jesus.
Live your life that is solely focused on Christ alone. From the thoughts and feelings you have in your mind, to the actions and words you do/say in your life.
11. Do No Conform To This World
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God – Romans 12:2.
Matthew 5:14-16 – “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.
Jesus was living in this world, but not for this world. We are not called to fit in, we are made to stand out. We are to be the light shining in the darkness. Do not conform to the ways of this world, because it will only bring you down and tear you apart. Satan is the ‘god’ of this world and he will do everything he can to try and manipulate and destroy God’s people.
Follow God. Do His Will in your life. Trust Him completely. Do not submit or conform to the ways of this world.
12. Fellowship With Others
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Matthew 18:20 – “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”.
Jesus fellowshipped with others, from choosing 12 men to be His disciples that He then taught to preach the gospel, heal the sick and feed the poor etc. But Jesus also fellowshipped with many others who followed Him and sat and listened to Him preach.
Fellowship is important in the Christian walk. It is a way for us to encourage one another and to grow and mature in the faith together.
Go to Church and connect with others there. Pray for one another. Go soul-winning together. Do things that glorify God each day. Lift each other up in prayer and with the Bible. Study the Word together and watch each other bloom into the person that God created them to be.
Keep Your Focus On Jesus
