How To Raise Godly Children
As Christians, we must make sure that we raise our children in Christ. The Bible tells us exactly how to raise our children. If we do not follow along with what God tells us in His Word, then we are being led astray. If we aren’t going to abide by what God tells us in terms of how to raise our children, then it is going to give lee-way for the devil to come in and teach them the ways of the world instead.
There is a saying between my best friend and I that if we don’t teach our kids, then the devil will. If we do not tell our children the truth of everything that we know of and go through in our lives, then the devil is going to essentially share his beliefs with them. This can lead to our children being negatively influenced by the world, and not The Word.
Raising children can be difficult, I know; I am a single mother. It isn’t an easy task, however, it is doable, as long as we have God. He is the one who gives us the strength, support and guidance that we need throughout our journey as a Christian parent.
I want to share with you these important, essential tips on how to raise Godly children in this corrupt world:
-
Study and Understand The Word Of God
2 Timothy 2:15 – “ Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.
First things first, you need to equip yourself with The Word of God. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15 to study to show ourselves approved. Therefore, we must study the Word, understand it, and abide by what God says in His Word. Once you have a better understanding of the Bible, you will be able to be led by Christ and not by the world when it comes to raising your children. -
Share The Gospel With Your Children
Mark 16:15 – “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”.
It is so important, especially from a young age, to expose your children to The Bible. Whether you read scriptures out aloud to your children, or they come with you to Church, whatever you decide to do, make sure that you expose them to The Word, and share the gospel with them. You can buy a children’s Bible so that it can be easier for them to understand once they are old enough to read. There are songs, videos and other things that your children can listen to and learn from. Don’t forget though, once you arm yourself with the Word, you will be able to share and explain to your children all about what the Bible says. -
Love Your Children
Psalm 127:3 – “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward”.
This is SO important. Love your children, love them the same way that Christ loves the Church. You have been blessed with this family of yours, and it is important that you show them how much you love them and care for them. They are going to feel so happy and loved by you. -
Train Your Children
Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.
The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6 to train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. This means that we must raise our children in a way in which the teachings do not leave them. When our children are young, they will be taught how to think, act, behave and so forth. Once they are older, these teachings will continue to encourage them to behave in such a way. For example, from a very young age, I have been teaching my daughter to use her manners. As she gets older, I will continue to encourage her to use her manners, and to be polite with me and others. This teaching will stay with her for the rest of her life as she learns that manners are important to use now and forever. -
Discipline Your Children
Deuteronomy 6:7 – “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up”.
This is another very important thing that we must do as Christians. We must discipline our children. Learn to say NO to your children from a young age. Set boundaries. Teach your children that there are consequences for their actions. Don’t let your children overrule you. You are the parent, and they are the child, and that is how it is supposed to be. Don’t let them run the show; you are in charge. When we love our children, we show that in our disciplining. If we don’t love our children, then we would just let them run amuck. Instead, we are teaching them to be good examples of what the Bible teaches us, as well as role models for others in society.
When others compliment you about how well-mannered and well-behaved your children are, it makes you feel good as a parent, and it helps you understand that you are doing a wonderful job. God would be so proud of you, too.
God is our Heavenly Father and He expects the same of us. He expects us to behave well, and to do well. He doesn’t want us to fall back into sin, or the temptations of this world. He tells us how to act and behave accordingly. This is the best example of how we are to parent our children, the same way that God essentially parents us as His children. -
Teach Your Children To Pray
Philippians 4:6 – “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God”.
Every night before bed, I tell my daughter to pray to God. Every so often, I remind her of what it means to pray, why it is important to pray and why we pray to God every night. The Bible tells us to stay in prayer, pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). When we encourage our children from a young age to pray, and to continually pray to God, it will inspire them to continue on with talking and praying to God as they get older and learn more and have more to say to Him.
I also pray before each meal with my daughter to teach her to thank God for the food that we have and to bless the food that we are about to eat. This is another great way to encourage your children to pray to God and stay consistent with praying.
It is also important to pray over our home. Every night before bed, I will go around and pray for our home/household, and here’s 3 important reasons why you should too!
Pray for your children. Pray for their health, safety and upbringing. Pray for guidance from God to direct you on how to raise them. Prayer is the most powerful tool that we have. It is a direct form of communication between ourselves and Our Creator. -
Include God In Everything
1 Corinthians 15:28 – “And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all”.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:31 that no matter what we do, do it for the glory of God. No matter what we do, think, eat or drink, do it all for God’s glory. Nothing else matters. The only thing that matter is all that we do for God. That is why it is so important to submit to Him and do everything in accordance to His will and not our own.
In everything that you do, include God in it all, and teach your children to do the same, also. -
Build A Good Relationship
Ephesians 6:4 – “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”.
Build a good and healthy relationship with your children. Spend time with them, get to know them, and teach them how to live their lives in a Godly manner. -
Set Good Examples
1 Timothy 4:12 – “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity”.
You are your children’s role models, so set good examples for them to learn from. Correct any bad habits that you have or they may be picking up on. Make sure that the way in which you behave aligns with God. That way you are setting a Godly, Biblical example for your children. The closer you become to God and the more you obey Him and do all that is in accordance to His Will and not your own, the more likely your children will grow in the faith and behave in a Godly manner as well. -
Be Involved And Intentional
Be involved in your children’s lives. Like I said before, get to know them, and learn all about them, and spend time doing what they love doing. Embrace their hobbies and likes. Don’t shut them out or ignore them. Build upon this relationship you have going with your children.
Be intentional with what your children are learning and being exposed to. We live in a broken, corrupt world, and the devil can easily come in and teach them or show them the ways of the world. Make sure that what they are learning, watching, playing with and so on, isn’t anything that will discourage their faith, or influence them to be led astray.
We are responsible for our own children. It is our duty as parents, and as Christians, to raise good children, to raise them right in The Lord. It is of paramount importance to raise our children with God and His Word, and to set healthy, righteous examples of how they are to be in this world. It is up to us to be open, honest and intentional with our raising and to make sure that they are protected from the negative influences of this world, and of the devil.
I pray that this encourages you.
